Living our Values

Compassion, Courage and Respect are not just words written on the wall, they are values in which our whole school community passionately believe.  It is so important to us that our children have opportunity to practice, learn and practically live out our values.  We notice, praise and celebrate when our children demonstrate compassion, courage or respect in their own individual ways.

The examples below demonstrate our values in action and the coloured quotes are from the children themselves.

Caring for our planet - Sustainability Trip to Ewhurst Park

Our School Captains, Eco Councillors and School Councillors from Year 5 and 6 recently went on a trip to Ewhurst Park.  Mrs Rolph organised the occasion for the children and was invited by Ewhurst in a celebration of the fact their resident beaver couple have had two kits!  Whilst there, the children learnt about the importance of conservation and sustainability.  We saw videos of the Beavers, learnt about their ecological benefits, made bug hotels and saw evidence of their dam building skills and lodge chimneys.  A few of the children were even lucky enough to see a baby beaver pop its head above the water!

Respectful Remembrance

On Remembrance Day this year, our year 5 and 6 pupils joined some members of our local community, soldiers and Revered Karen for a remembrance service at the war memorial.  It was a special time where we remembered all those who have given their lives in service.  The children were respectful throughout and it was a privilege to hear from the armed servicemen present about their service.

Spreading Compassion in Our Community

At Silchester, we have been learning how to look after ourselves and each other and the importance of maintaining positive mental health and wellbeing.  We went on a whole school walk, delivered messages of compassion to houses around Silchester, practiced yoga, had Relax Kids, made fruit kebabs, friendship bracelets and neurodiverse cupcakes, created gratitude journals, learnt how to fill buckets and bonded with our new buddies!  The wellbeing ripples of effect have been felt across the school and into our community!

Courageous Space Exploration

Meganne Christian of the European Space Agency came to visit Silchester School and gave the children an unforgettable experience.  The children (and staff!) absolutely loved hearing about Meganne’s adventures around the world, her scientific studies in Antarctica and what it feels like to float in space.  ‘Pengaroo’ the zero-gravity indicator was a big hit!  Learning about the training and challenges Meganne has endured throughout her achievements was fascinating.  The children came up with some insightful and thoughtful questions and hopefully came home inspired to ‘reach for the stars’!

To enhance this experience, the Wonderdome came to Silchester!  Every class crawled into the dome to take part in an interactive presentation and tour of the universe.  The planetarium gave children the chance to see our world from a different perspective and the roller-coaster was a dizzying but fun experience!  It was so lovely to see the children’s faces when they saw the dome and to hear the gasps, oohs and aahs from the outside!
