At Silchester, we want all children to discover a love of reading and to have the opportunity to become immersed in stories, poems, non-fiction and other forms of texts. Children start with a systematic synthetic phonics scheme, Read Write Inc, providing children with the skills to speedily decode unfamiliar words and recognise familiar words on sight, whilst developing their comprehension skills. Alongside Read Write Inc, children are exposed to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books. Once children have completed the Read Write Inc scheme, they move to whole class guided reading to further develop their word reading and comprehension skills.

We want all children to view writing as an important means of communication and enjoyment, where writing is purposeful and their voice can be heard. Children are taught to spell quickly and accurately, with fluent, legible and speedy handwriting to ensure effective transcription. They are taught to form, articulate and communicate their ideas, then organise them coherently for the intended reader.  Reading and writing lessons provide opportunities for children to enhance their vocabulary and to continue to develop their confidence and competence in spoken language and listening skills. Children are taught to control their speaking and writing using Standard English and the elements of spelling, grammar and punctuation listed in the National Curriculum English programme of study.
